What Is A Slice?
For beginner golfer, it is essential to know what a slice is in the first place. Well, a slice is just like a golf shot where the shot makes a significant curve in flight from the left direction to the right.
Although one may hit a slice intentionally on some occasions, it is mainly because of the result of a serious level of swing flaw.
Why Do You Slice?
There can be different reasons why you experience a slice while playing a golf shot. So, it is important to know which one is applicable to your case. Some golfers may face only one of the many swing flaws, but many golfers may display multiple signs or reasons.
Before I tell you the causes of a slice, I must let you know about the definitions of some important terminology:
- Target Line
It is basically an imaginary line starting directly a few feet behind your golf ball to your intended target, for example, the flagstick.
- Swing Path
This is known as the specific direction the golf clubhead moves at an impact and is measured in relation to the intended target. Typically, golfers describe a swing path as being “in-to-out” or “out-to-in”.
- Closed or Open Clubface
An open clubface is the one where the line of the clubface aims at the right of the target line, imparting left-to-right spin slicing to the golf ball.
A closed clubface is the one where the line of the clubface aims at the left of the target line, imparting right-to-left hook-spin to the golf ball.
What Does Cause A Slice?
If I put it simply, the basic reason that causes a tee shot curving from the left-to-right direction is the clubface that is open to a great extent in proportion to the swing. While playing a shot, if your swing is on the right of the target, left of the target, or even completely straight down your target line, an open clubhead will pass on the left-to-right spin, leading to a slice at the end.
These are the possible events that can cause a slice –
- Possibly a weak grip.
- Too tight grip pressure.
- Out-to-in swing path.
- Shoulders left-aligned.
- Adjustment of equipment.
How to Correct A Slice With A Driver – Step By Step Procedure
Since I will be using some specific tools for this procedure to correct a slice with a driver, I would recommend you to manage the same tools before you proceed.
Here is a list of the required tools:
- A Driving Range.
- Drivers.
- Golf balls.
- Tees.
- Small and Soft Golf Towel.
Step 1 – Managing The Right Equipment
Let me tell you the fact that a slice, sometimes, is not a golfer’s fault! That would be really great if this were the case for every golfer out there, right?
Well, we all know that playing golf is as tough as it is.
It would be astounding if you could use your golf club following the correct launch, and the slice is just disappeared.
Unfortunately, the truth is it’s not simple. But you need to make sure that you have to select the right equipment.
- Loft means forgiveness.
- If you are really having issues with a slice, I would suggest you choose a minimum of 10.5-degrees of the loft.
- It is also essential to select the right flex on the Driver. If you are planning to hit your golf ball more than 160 yards, it is better to use a Stiff Flex.
- If you use a flex that’s too stiff, it will become hard to make the release. And, the result is more slice.
- Be very careful while using any old golf equipment. Technology is working very hard to eliminate the slice issue. So, anything that is like ten years old, you shouldn’t use that.
- Drivers that are more offset can possibly help to correct a slice.
- Drivers that come with an adjustment feature can adjust the clubface moderately closed and play a significant role in fixing the slice issue.
- Never believe the misconception that a more costly golf club will fix your slice.
Step 2 – The Grip
The golf club grips can sometimes be a problematic or tricky thing. Although it’s not tough to constantly make a fidget with the grip, it is vital to focus on working with the basics of the grip. It gives you the chance of squaring up your clubface.
You will not find it fun while working on the grip, but it’s awfully important, to be honest.
When you neglect the fundamentals of this game, it will become much more difficult for you. And this is what no golfer wants to experience.
- At first, grip the golf club using your left hand. At this point, you have to make sure that your golf club is sitting entirely between the fingers of your left hand.
- While holding the golf club with your left hand, you should look down. If you see two knuckles, it means you are holding it right.
- Always remember that the position of your land while holding your golf club is extremely important. If you can’t hold the club using your left hand following the right way, it won’t be possible to make the intended shot.
- Your right thumb should make a V shape, and the forefinger must be pointed towards your shoulder.
- If you are a beginner golfer, you can try the training grips to place your hands in the right place while holding your golf club.
Step 3 – Setup/Stance
If you ask an experienced golfer, you will come to know that the pro golfers constantly check their entire setup, ideally before the backswing.
- If you are a right-handed golfer, you should position the golf ball at the inner side of your left foot.
- Accurate ball position helps to hit the golf ball on the upswing.
- While you hit a driver on the downswing, it can lead to a slice.
- Accurate golf ball position also helps you to keep your shoulders properly aligned. This also helps in reducing the chance of causing a swing.
- If your shoulders are not properly aligned, it becomes tough for you to square up the clubface. And the result is a slice.
Step 4 – Swing Path
Most of the beginner golfers happen to make a slice when the swing path direction is more outside-in than the inside-out. This is a bit tough to understand. Also, a drill is mandatory to explain the entire thing precisely.
- One of the most effective drills to observe if your swing is on the right path is the towel-under-the-arm drill.
- If you are the type of golfer who struggles much with a slice, you should start warm up with this drill every time you go out there in the green field.
- Practicing this drill will help you get stronger backswings. Consequently, you will observe noticeable changes in your shots. And, your body will gradually learn to repeat this procedure.
- Keep practicing hitting following this drill using irons, drivers, hybrids. And, eventually, you will learn to play the proper swing path.
- If you are a right-handed golfer, make sure you place a soft towel under your right armpit.
Step 5 – Club Face
One of the most common mistakes made by almost all the slicers is that they tend to slow down the swing while intending to hit a proper shot.
Based on my golfing experience, I can tell you that whenever I tried to slow down the swing, I ended up with a terrible shot (something I don’t want to repeat in the future).
You can follow these tips to square up the clubface:
- Double-check whether the grip is correct.
- Make sure the entire setup is completely perfect.
- Ensure that you have the proper equipment required for your desired swing.
- While you complete the backswing and make a transition to the downswing, a minimum rotation of your forearms will make the clubface go from open-to-square-to-closed.
- Many golfers try to swing drivers much faster compared to other golf clubs. If you are a beginner, you shouldn’t try this.
- Don’t give up. Practice more, and eventually, you will taste the success.
